Without being too specific, it is fair to say we have had our share of anxiety in our home. As I went about looking for answers, I found we were not alone. So many families are dealing with anxiety as a big part of their every day lives. Anxiety finds its way into our homes and sets up camp. We start avoiding the things that make us worry and stop living our lives. So many things like going to bed or going to school become a big struggle and we are left exhausted and depleted.
How one video changed the way we deal with worry
I spoke to my friend, Doug Bonnema, who is an elementary school counselor in New Hampshire. He sent me a link to a video by Lynn Lyons, LICSW (cost $49.95 non-affiliated link). Along the lines of Dan Siegel, Lynn simply describes the brain science behind anxiety and gives parents strategies to immediately and effectively help themselves and their children. This video was, and continues to be, so helpful to our family. My husband and I watched it together first, and since it was so well done and easy to understand, we had our kids watch part of it with us. In my opinion, well worth the 50 bucks.
Return on investment
In fact, this morning while I was writing this and reviewing the video, one of my kids came up and said, “Oh yeah, that. I don’t need that anymore.” And it’s true. We have completely changed how we handle worry in our home.
Our new normal
New situations will arise and worry will come, because if you are living your life, you are trying new things. The difference is now we have the tools to handle worry with confidence. Instead of constantly reassuring or avoiding, we say “Bring it on – we can handle this!”
